Steve Sarkisian, the head coach at Texas, has been sober for eight years. It’s also been eight years since the event at USC. Sarkisian was fired from USC when he appeared inebriated during meetings and games. He also had a contentious divorce from his first wife, with whom he had three children. But, gradually and steadily, his life began to return to normal. His current wife, Loreal, was really supportive, but it was also the coach’s resolve to change his life.

Steve Sarkisian’s weight loss may be related to the healthy lifestyle he has adopted since having heart surgery. The football coach is currently free of illness or injury. Sarkisian underwent heart surgery in 2020. Sarkisian was still coaching at Alabama under Nick Saban’s leadership at the time. The heart surgery was conducted to correct a congenital cardiovascular problem.
The treatment left a 7-inch vertical scar from the top of his rib cage to the bottom of his stomach, but it saved his life. And Texas’ coach and family are grateful to Nick Saban. Saban’s father died of heart illness when he was 46 years old. As a result, Saban requested that all of his employees have their heart health checked.
During the rigorous physical examination, the doctor discovered Sarkisian had a cardiac issue and immediately advised him to undergo emergency surgery. Doctors created profound hypothermic circulatory arrest, slowed his heart to a crawl, decreased his body temperature, and then cut him open.
The testing also indicated that Steve was born with a bicuspid valve, which occurs in only 1% of the population. Sarkisian’s recovery occurred during COVID-19, with him requiring heart and lung exercises. In an interview with Sports Illustrated in 2020, Steve stated that the surgery assisted him in losing weight. He also stated that he felt lighter on his feet throughout practice.
Steve Sarkisian’s Wife Helps During A Difficult Time
Steve Sarkisian hit rock bottom in 2015. He was fired by USC after demonstrating unexpected behavior during practice. Following his divorce from his first wife, the coach struggled with alcohol. But he soon met his second wife, Loreal Sarkisian, who helped him through the most difficult phase of his life.
Saban has remained sober since his firing from USC. Sarkisian revealed in 2017, two years after the occurrence, that he was still in a treatment program for his drinking problems. He told reporters that his drinking began while he was coaching the Washington Huskies from 2009 to 2013.
Sarkisian stated in 2021 that if the event had not occurred, he would not be the person he is now. He also stated that his experience will help his teammates who encounter challenges regularly.
Steve stated that he wished to be a role model for them to look up to. On the Pivot Podcast, Steve talked about his wife and her influence.
“The reality is, there were things in my life that, shoot, I had to get reconnected to the Lord, and she helped me do that,” she said. “I had to rediscover my self-esteem.”
He went on to elaborate, “She was the one when jobs would come up, she would say, ‘I don’t think that’s the one, I think you are better than that.” Sarkisian went on to claim that Loreal gave him the guts to start over. Loreal was the one who helped her husband walk again and heal after his heart surgery in 2020. It had only been one week since their wedding.
Loreal described her concern following Steve’s procedure in an interview. She worried if Steve would ever return to normal activities, let alone coaching. She would also drive him to work every day at 5 a.m., as Steve had forbidden. But Steve rapidly recovered, and the two are currently seen having the time of their lives in Texas.
