Zahn first met Robyn Peterman, a writer and theater artist who was the daughter of costume designer J. Peterman, while acting on a national tour of Bye Bye Birdie in 1991.
Steve and Robyn are well-known public figures. Steve has a renowned acting career and has landed several parts in popular movies and television series. Robyn has amassed a significant fortune from her best-selling books.

The Zahns were born in Marshall, Minnesota, to parents Carleton Edward Zahn and Zelda Clair Zahn. His parents are Lutheran clergyman Carleton Edward Zahn and former bookstore employee and YMCA administrator Zelda Clair Zahn.
His father is of German and Swedish descent, while his mother is of German background.
Zahn began his high school career at Kennedy Elementary School in Mankato, Minnesota, where he had previously spent some of his early years. He took part in school productions and twice won the Minnesota State speaking contest.
He graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School in 1986 with a diploma with the intention of ultimately joining the U.S. Marine Corps.
Zahn left Gustavus Adolphus College after only one semester after seeing the first West End performance of Les Misérables. Later, Zahn received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University.
