Steven John Assanti was born on December 2, 1981, in Providence, Rhode Island. He will be 40 years old in 2022. Steven grew up in Providence before relocating to Texas. When it comes to his parents, his father’s name is Steven Veilette, while his mother’s name has yet to be revealed.

Justin Assanti, Steven’s younger brother, also participated on My 600-lb Life. According to Assanti, he and his brother had a difficult upbringing due to their mother’s alcoholism. Assanti also stated that he and his brother were abused by their mother. According to his own words,

“To put it mildly, my childhood was abysmal. My mother was an alcoholic, and my parents’ relationship was strained. As a result, my brother Justin and I endured a great deal of abuse. It was constant arguing and fighting.”

Furthermore, Assanti confessed that their father abandoned their mother due to her drinking habit. Steven was 11 years old at the time he left, and his younger brother Justin was 5 years old.

“Whenever there was food around, he devoured it before I could eat it.”

Steven made his media debut in 2017 after appearing in the fifth season of TLC’s My 600-lb Life. He and his brother appeared in the 13th and 14th episodes of the season of the show. Steven and Justin have appeared in four episodes of the show since then.

While Steven weighed nearly 800 pounds when he first appeared on the show, his brother weighed nearly 600 pounds. In truth, Steven had difficulty moving around, although his brother had less difficulty; yet, he was at high risk due to his obesity.

Assanti made news in October 2015 after being thrown out of a Rhode Island hospital for allegedly ordering a pizza. He weighed 778 pounds at the time, and he checked himself to the Providence hospital to treat his “eating addiction.”

He was in the hospital for a few months and lost 20 pounds during that time. However, after breaking a rule in his care plan by ordering a pizza, he was told he could no longer stay at that facility. “I recognize that it is an addiction.” And it’s an illness,” Assanti NBC10 explained.

He further stated that he needed to stay in the hospital till his body weight dropped to 550 pounds in order to have gastric bypass surgery. His father said he couldn’t take his son home after the hospital kicked him out and that he didn’t know what to do. In his own words,

“I just don’t know where to turn.” I called everyone I could think of in Rhode Island, but no one seems to be able to assist me.”

Mr. Veilette was eventually able to get his son into the back of his SUV. Furthermore, the father stated that he would continue to drive until he found a permanent solution for his eldest kid. Following that, Veilette took his son to the emergency room at Kent Hospital, but they were not permitted to spend the night there.

His Painkiller Addiction

Steven Assanti made the decision to lose weight and motivate others to do the same in the mid-2010s. However, his food addiction got in the way, and he was unable to attain his goals. He is a pizza addict, consuming up to six pizzas every day.

He was also addicted to pharmaceuticals, particularly pain relievers. He routinely used his leg pain (Lymphadem) to get a free trip to the nearest hospital and feed his drug addiction. Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, Steve’s Obesity doctor in My 600 lb Life, eventually discharged him from the weight loss program and sent him to a drug rehabilitation center in Downtown Houston.

Steven returned to the ER several times after leaving the recovery program to satisfy his heroin craving. Following such behavior, Dr. Nowzaradan issued him a state of Texas warning that any further drug usage might land him in prison.

Steven Assanti’s life changed dramatically in May of 2018. He supposedly married Stephanie Sanger at the time. According to Intouch Weekly, Sanger updated her profile photo to include Steven. They are wearing wedding bands in the photograph. Meanwhile, Sanger captioned the image as follows:

In late 2021, Assanti contracted Covid-19. According to his social media posts, he contracted the virus in December 2021, along with pneumonia. Steve updated his fans a few days after the original post, reporting he still had covid/pneumonia.
