Steven Spielberg: Christian or Jewish? Despite his pride in his Jewish ethnicity, Steven Spielberg said that school bullying made him humiliated. He discussed anti-Semitism in a media interview while visiting India to work in the film industry. India Today released interview excerpts Sunday.
Spielberg mentioned his Discovery Channel documentary series, “Why We Hate,” which raised anti-Semitism. Steven said, “As an elementary school student, I encountered anti-Semitism within my school. Certain popular students targeted less popular ones, including myself, who had low status in school.” He also acknowledged his Orthodox Jewish heritage.
Spielberg called the maltreatment shame rather than hate. He said, “I felt shame rather than hate. Through constant teasing and torment, they made me embarrassed of my Jewish ancestry.
Steven Spielberg’s Religion, Ethnicity
As previously mentioned, Steven Spielberg is Jewish. Steven was born Ukrainian Orthodox Jewish. His parents were musician Leah Adler (1920–2017) and engineer Arnold Spielberg (1917–2020). Steven’s cinematic career began in 1975 with directing lessons. His childhood was in Haddon Township, New Jersey.
Early on, Steven became passionate about filmmaking. His first amateur video was a Lionel train disaster he made aged 12. Spielberg produced “The Last Gunfight,” a nine-minute, 8-mm film, for the photography merit badge in 1958 as a Boy Scout. He became an Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout rank.

The director met Kate Capshaw in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Capshaw converted to Judaism before their October 12, 1991 wedding. Steven said his marriage to Capshaw revived his Jewish ancestry. “Kate is Protestant, but she insisted on converting to Judaism. Before we married in 1991, she studied for a year, had the ‘mikveh’ rite, and converted.
“She chose to fully embrace Judaism before becoming my wife, and I believe that more than anything else, she brought me closer to my Jewish identity,” Steven added. Her effect on their family’s spirituality is credited. Pacific Palisades, California, and East Hampton, New York, are their homes.
