Sufjan Stevens is he gay? Maybe. He is most likely bisexual. His songs, at the very least, appear to imply this rather than being simply gay or straight. His sexual orientation is totally his own. That is everything he owns. His song should be able to stand on its own. Artists who identify as heterosexual keep their sexual orientation private. Isn’t it all for naught? Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there with his family until he was nine years old. The family relocated to Alanson, Michigan, which is located in the northern section of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, at that time. His father Rasjid and stepmother Pat reared him, with only intermittent excursions to Oregon to see his mother Carrie after she married her second husband, Lowell Brams.
Brams later became the CEO of Stevens’ record label, Asthmatic Kitty. Stevens has Greek and Lithuanian origins. Before graduating from Harbor Light Christian School, Stevens attended the Detroit Waldorf School, Alanson Public Schools, and Interlochen Arts Academy. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, he pursued an MFA at The New School in New York City.
Stevens learned to play the oboe and English horn as a child, which may be heard on his CDs. Stevens began studying guitar after enrolling at Hope College. Sufjan is an abbreviation for “comes with a sword.” The name was most famously used by Abu Sufyan, a person from the early history of Islam. Stevens received his name from the founder of Subud, an ecumenical spiritual group to which his parents joined at the time of his birth.
