After working in broadcast news for more than a decade, she ventured into uncharted waters with the US Department of Energy. She was chosen to work on the first-ever Energy cast, a regular newscast showcasing on-the-ground work.

Summer provides updates on ground-breaking scientific discoveries, missions to ensure national security, and environmental cleanup. She is a journalist with an Emmy award who also supports the chronically ill.

Is Summer Dashe’s illness treated by POTS syndrome?

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are two chronic conditions that Summer Dashe has.

EDS is a hereditary condition that results in excessively supple tissues and joints, whereas POTS prevents the proper operation of the autonomic nervous system. Every time the body moves from lying down to sitting or standing, something goes wrong.

For either condition, there is no treatment. At age 26, Summer first experienced the symptoms, which included impaired vision, memory issues, difficulty controlling her body’s temperature, tremors, lightheadedness, persistent nausea, migraines, white spots on her skin, shortness of breath, exhaustion, and more.

She was first concerned that she wouldn’t be considered hireable if people in the profession found out. She eventually became more resilient, though, and adopted the mantra “I’m not dying, so I have to figure out a way to live.”

Shortly after leaving ABC’s WATE, Summer received a request to serve as the anchor of a regular medical program. She was happy to continue appearing on television and speaking about a subject that was so dear to her.

She is a passionate supporter of POTS and other chronic ailments; as a result of her work, she was nominated for a regional Emmy and received wide exposure.

According to Summer, she decided to make disability advocacy her life’s work and that she would pursue journalism as her career.

Her life and perspective were significantly altered by this illness. She considers it a privilege to use her expertise in filming, writing, editing, and public speaking to advocate for those who experience comparable difficulties.
