Because of his surname “Mordecai,” NCAA football quarterback Tanner Mordecai is frequently asked if he is Jewish. However, the former SMU Mustangs athlete has remained silent on his convictions.
His religious beliefs are never mentioned in his interviews or on social media. Instead, the Texas native, who was born to American parents Micah and Leann Mordecai, uses social media to share photos of his family and games. Tanner Mordecai (born November 8, 1999) is a Wisconsin Badgers quarterback under head coach Luke Fickell. After previously playing for the Oklahoma Sooners (2018-20) and the SMU Mustangs (2021-22), he joined the transfer portal in December 2023 for his final season at Wisconsin.
He was a member of the SMU Mustangs under head coach Rhett Lashlee in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl. They were defeated by the BYU Cougars, however, by a score of 23-24. He achieved a career-high in 2021 with 308 pass completions on 454 attempts for 3,628 yards and 39 touchdowns.

So far, the American collegiate quarterback has not spoken publicly about his beliefs. The surname “Mordecai” is Jewish, according to historical documents. ‘Mordecai: An Early American Family,’ by Emily Bingham, examines early American history and the Mordecai family’ struggle to adjust to American culture as Jews.
This, however, does not necessarily suggest Tanner’s faith has come to an end. On Facebook, his mother posted photos of the family spending Christmas standing in front of the Christmas tree. Taylor, his eldest sister, married in a traditional Christian church ceremony, as previously reported.
Tanner’s brother-in-law, AJ, is a devout Christian who is frequently seen on social media wearing a cross necklace. Some say that Oklahoma alum Tanner Mordecai is Christian because of his family’s devotion to Christmas and religion. Even if the football player does not express his religious beliefs, it is apparent that his devotion to faith drives him to succeed.
