James Cameron, the director of Avatar, revealed in a GQ interview that actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Jack Dawson in the renowned disaster-romantic drama film Titanic, almost didn’t get the role after first refusing to read the text for the popular film. Cameron allegedly told DiCaprio the following:
“It’s like a gigantic movie that will take two years of my life, and while I’m doing post-production, you’ll be doing five other things,” the speaker said. I won’t ruin it by casting the wrong person, I promise. As a result, you must read to be considered for the role.
He continued by outlining his reasoning for targeting DiCaprio as the movie’s leading man. Throughout the talk, Cameron also touched on a number of his earlier works, such as the Terminator movies, Avatar, and Aliens.
James Cameron claimed in the interview that when he first approached Leonardo DiCaprio about playing the lead, the actor declined to read his part, leading Cameron to reply, “Well, thanks for coming by.”
He claimed that after that, in order to get DiCaprio cast in the movie, he convinced him to read the script. Leonardo DiCaprio “changed into Jack” the moment he called “action,” according to Cameron, who remarked that after the actor gave his permission to read it.
“He mimicked the situation. Jack was bathed in brightness when the thick clouds had broken. ‘OK, he’s the man,’ I think.
James Cameron continued, applauding Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s connection and acting prowess by stating that it would be “very impossible” to imagine Titanic without them.
