Tennis Star Bjorn Borg, Exits India Event After Minister Runs Late

Bjorn Borg was forced to leave a ceremony honoring him in the Indian city of Bangalore (Bengaluru) when a prominent politician arrived over two hours late.

Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka state, whose capital is Bangalore, was to honor Borg on Tuesday.

The show was due to begin at 9.30 a.m., but Mr. Bommai arrived at 11.15 a.m. By that time, Borg had left to observe his son Leo’s tennis play.

An unnamed source from the organizing committee told the Deccan Chronicle that the chief minister’s late arrival was due to “other responsibilities.”

In India, it is not uncommon for politicians and celebrities to arrive several hours late to events.

Mr. Bommai watched Leo’s match against the Taiwanese tennis player Hsu Yu-hsiou for around 20 minutes before departing the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) arena. Afterward, the celebration honoring Borg was canceled.

Together with Bjorn Borg, former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj was to be honored.

Sunil Yajaman, joint secretary of the KSLTA, stated that the function was canceled because Amritraj deemed it “inappropriate” for him to be honored on his own.

“Both of them will be honored at the office of the chief minister tomorrow or the next day,” he told BBC Hindi.

Leo participated in the Bengaluru Tennis Open at the KSLTA. The 19-year-old lost by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

Amitraj hosted a meal in Borg’s honor at the KSLTA Hall of Fame, where he signed his image.
