It was confirmed on July 17, 2023, that Cheng Li Hui and fellow lawmaker Tan Chuan-Jin had an “inappropriate relationship.” Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin persisted in her relationship with fellow People’s Action Party (PAP) MP Cheng Li Hui despite Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s admonition in February. Although he was not yet aware of the relationship’s start, PM Lee stated that he learned about it following the 2020 General Election.
Not long after he announced the resignations of Mr. Tan and Ms. Cheng from the PAP, he gave a speech at the Istana on Monday afternoon. According to PM Lee, he last spoke and gave each of them advice in February.
But in July, he came across information that “strongly suggested” the relationship had persisted. Tan submitted his resignation and an apology to PM Lee for his actions. Tan, however, was told to hold off until handover procedures were established to protect the inhabitants of Marine Parade GRC.

He has served as the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council since 2014 in addition to this accolade. From 1987 to 2011, Tan Chuan-Jin served with distinction in the Singapore Armed Forces. After advancing through the ranks, he became a Brigadier General and retired.
