Bank Robbers: The Last Great Robbery, a true-crime documentary from Netflix, explores the historic 2006 Buenos Aires bank heist. In January 2006, a group of thieves robbed a bank in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and held more than 20 people hostage. But the story is not over yet. Before the documentary is released on Wednesday, let’s look at four key facts about the legendary Buenos Aires bank robbery.
From planning until apprehension, there were four significant moments in the Buenos Aires bank robbery.

1. Building the tunnel
According to Oxygen Media, the Buenos Aires bank heist had been planned out for two years. The idea to dig a tunnel within the bank was the brainchild of a man by the name of Fernando Araujo, who also plotted the entire crime. The tunnel used for the theft reportedly required a significant amount of planning and finance. Sebastián Garca Bolster built the tunnel, according to Oxygen Media.
2) A plan to deceive the cops.
According to Oxygen Media, Julián Zalloecheverra was asked to join the infamous Super Bandas gang of bank robbers sometime before the crime by his friend Beto de la Torre. The group’s goal was to burglarize the Argentine branch of Banco Rio.
By bursting into the bank through the main entrance and holding people captive inside while other gang members entered the tunnel they had made to steal money and other valuables from the bank’s safe deposits, the gang intended to deceive the police.
3. The application
As part of their strategy to draw police attention away from the actual heist occurring in the basement, the gang followed their plan by sending some members inside the building brandishing fake guns and holding people hostage.
The group made the decision, according to Oxygen Media, to complete the crime in two hours. After taking cash, jewelry, and other valuables, the burglars left the tunnel as Julián Zalloecheverra waited outside in a car for them to do so. The police started looking into the Buenos Aires bank robbery, but for many weeks they were unable to turn up any solid leads.
The Seize (4)
A month after the incident, Beto de la Torre and his girlfriend were found, in a painfully ironic turn of events. According to GQ, Torre’s wife informed authorities about his role in the Buenos Aires bank robbery after she learned he was flirting with her.
According to GQ, Torre’s wife named a great deal more group members. Authorities later detained Araujo, Bolster, Luis Mario Vitette, Zalloecheverra, and Beto. Although two more people are said to have participated in the theft, they were never charged, and the police were unable to retrieve the stolen funds. On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, Bank Robbers: The Last Great Heist will be accessible on Netflix.
