According to a biography on the company website, “he passed away on his 100th birthday Saturday, surrounded by his loving family singing Broadway show tunes to comfort him at his home in Farmington.”

The Founder was born on Saturday, January 7, 1923, in Pittsburgh, and he passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

In his senior year at Lehigh University, Hardy joined in the American Army Air Corps and went on to serve as a radioman in World War II.

After working as a radioman for a while, he made the decision to join the family’s jewelry business. He also pursued his education during this time and obtained a degree in industrial engineering.

Then he founded Green Hills Lumber, which is today known as 84 Lumber and has more than 250 locations nationally, with the help of his family and friends.

Hardy said he called 84 Lumber after the town where he resided and established his headquarters.

His family agreed with the general consensus that he was a real hero who always showed them that nothing is impossibly difficult. He was admired by everyone for who he was.

The funeral ceremony for Hardy will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church on January 12 and will be followed by a private burial.
