Eugene Levy, the host and executive producer of Apple TV+’s new series The Reluctant Traveler, will investigate some of the world’s most unique hotels as well as the people, places, and cultures that surround them. Eugene Levy, who isn’t your typical travel show host, isn’t always brave or well-versed in foreign travel and has decided it’s time to broaden his horizons.
Levy will pack his luggage with trepidation, hoping that his experiences will open up a whole new chapter in his life as long as he doesn’t have to deal with his motion sickness and can still have dinner at seven o’clock. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Schitt’s Creek actor said that his trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa, particularly the safari ride during the new season, was “undoubtedly the most powerful,” despite his initial reluctance to go.
“It never really tickled me because I recognize all of the creatures. Seeing them up close will not be particularly interesting to me. Nonetheless, I discovered the danger that many of these creatures face on a daily basis from poachers and hunters. That definitely touched a nerve with me.”
Levy went on to say that while he was aware of the South African poaching crisis, it wasn’t until he saw the animals that it hit home.
Levy visits a volcano, travels by helicopter, and even goes ice fishing in the Arctic Circle, as shown in the video. He also finds himself riding a horse through the desert. In one memorable scene, Levy had to deal with a sick elephant, telling the camera that he’d never stuck his fingers up an elephant’s bottom before.
Eugene Levy has been a working actor for nearly five decades. Fans of the popular American Pie series may recognize him as Jim’s father. He is best known for his portrayal of Johnny Rose in the smash Netflix comedy series Schitt’s Creek, which he co-wrote with his son, Dan Levy. Eugene has also appeared in films such as Splash, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Father of the Bride II, Armed and Dangerous, The Man, A Mighty Wind, and others.
Eugene Levy’s The Reluctant Traveler will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday
In the first episode of the eight-part docuseries The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy season 1, the 76-year-old actor decides to reconnect with nature and learn what it’s like to be really cold by traveling to the Arctic Circle and the frozen wilderness of Lapland. Eugene says in the episode:
“This is about as severe as it gets for someone who doesn’t appreciate extremes. One for the couch potatoes.”
While Eugene visits eight different countries in The Reluctant Traveler, the show’s trailer reveals that the actor prefers “the vast interiors” to travel. Sarah Levy, his daughter and co-star on Schitt’s Creek, and his wife, Deborah Divine, accompany him on several of his adventures in the series.
The Reluctant Traveler, created by Twofour for Apple TV+ and executive produced by Eugene Levy and David Brindley, will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, February 24, 2023. The show will most likely air at 3 a.m. ET.
