The costume of Sam Ryder from the Eurovision Song Contest is on display in Liverpool before the city’s hosting of the international competition.
The Space Man singer wore the black denim costume adorned with 15,000 beads and diamonds to the 2022 event in Turin, Italy.
The outfit, which took more than 200 hours to create, incorporates sun, moon, planet, and star motifs.
According to the artist, the attire signified “a turning moment” in music.
Sam Ryder added,
“The process of writing Space Man with dear friends, the journey we took as a team, and the positive reception and result we received all culminated in a moment shared in this suit, and I couldn’t be happier that it will be on public display for Liverpool and fans around the world to enjoy.”
“For me, it depicts a turning point in the competition for the United Kingdom and in my personal musical journey,” he remarked.
“The costume itself required about 210 hours of labor… roughly the same amount of time I spent practicing the song’s high notes.”
In May of 2023, Liverpool will host an event on behalf of war-torn Ukraine, which won the event last year.
The jumpsuit was designed by stylist Luke Day, who drew inspiration from the musical tradition of Britain, including Ziggy Stardust, Freddie Mercury, and Elton John.
“We wanted it to show his interest in astronomy and astrology without being overly literal,” he explained.
Mr. Day stated that Jenny King spent over 200 hours hand-embellishing the suit with over 15,000 pearls, beads, and stones with sun, moon, and star themes.
The group is currently on display at the British Music Experience in the city.
The “symbolic” jumpsuit, according to Executive Director Liz Koravos, is “one of the great stage garments of the present day.”
She continued,
“We are excited by an object that tells a significant story, and this one tells so many, from Sam’s rocket-powered triumphs to Eurovision’s spirit of inclusivity to the human message of Space Man.”
