Inspired by T-Bone Walker’s guitar licks and stage antics, Berry joined the Johnnie Johnson Combo in early 1953.
By the late ’50s, Berry had already established himself as a successful artist, having released a string of hit albums and appeared in both films and on the concert circuit. His bar, Berry’s Club Bandstand, had also recently opened in St. Louis.
As of January 1962, he was serving a three-year prison term for transporting a minor girl (under the age of 14) across state borders to engage in sexual activity. This violated the Mann Act. After the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame debuted in 1986, Berry was one of the first artists inducted.
He is often credited with “laying the framework for not just a rock and roll sound but a rock and roll posture.” A frequent fixture on Rolling Stone’s “best of” rankings, Berry placed fifth on both the magazine’s 2004 and 2011 editions of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
