Thomas Barrack Was Charged For Allegedly Working As A Foreign Agent For UAE

On July 20, 2021, Thomas Barrack, a 75-year-old private equity businessman, and significant Trump supporter, was charged with acting as a foreign agent for the United Arab Emirates.

The allegations stem from a time frame between 2016 and 2018 when Thomas Barrack is said to have illegally worked with the UAE to advance Trump’s campaign.

Reuters claims that UAE authorities paid Barrack to further the UAE’s interests in private and gave him instructions on what to say on television. According to the prosecution, Barrack used his connections with the UAE to sway Trump’s decisions.

Additionally, the prosecution alleges that Barrack used his relationship with Trump to sway his views on foreign policy throughout the 2016 presidential campaign.

According to CBS, Barrack has been accused of lying to law enforcement, obstructing justice, and acting as an agent for a foreign power. He was detained for two days after his arrest in July 2021 before being freed on a $250 million bail. Barrack will defend himself against these charges in federal court in Brooklyn later this month. Jury selection will start on September 19th.

Thomas Barrack, a Lebanese American raised in Culver City, California, started his legal profession after earning his law degree from USC Gould in 1972.

According to Fortune, the year after he graduated, he began working for a law firm run by Herbert W. Kalmbach, who was then Richard Nixon’s attorney. He was dispatched to Saudi Arabia as a result of his time at the law firm, where he made relationships and worked for Saudi royal family members.

The New York Times claims that Thomas Barrack and Donald Trump became friends in 1985, at which point Barrack had established himself as a recognized investor by making investments in several hotels and department stores. After selling Trump stock in a company, Barrack first met Trump.

He gained the most notoriety, nevertheless, for his support of Donald Trump in the 2016 US Presidential election. The Wall Street Journal claims that UAE authorities recommended Barrack for the position of the American ambassador to Abu Dhabi.

Rashid al-Malik and Matthew Grimes are accused of being Barrack’s collaborators in the indictment. A 27-year-old employee named Grimes is said to have helped Barrack communicate with UAE authorities.

A 43-year-old UAE national named Rashid Al-Malik is thought to act as a middleman between American officials and UAE government sources. Under Section 951 of the Penal Code, Barrack and Grimes were charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of acting as foreign agents without notifying the Justice Department. If found guilty, they may spend up to 10 years in jail.
