Eileen Julia Bell Tobin and Joseph H. Tobin were Tobin Bell’s parents when he was born in Queens, New York, on August 7, 1942. His father, the creator of the radio station WJDA, was of Irish descent, while his mother was an English actress. With his two brothers, Bell spent most of his formative years in Weymouth, Massachusetts.
He majored in journalism and liberal arts in college to pursue a career as a writer. His master’s degree in environmental science was earned after he later attended Montclair State University. After completing his education, Bell briefly worked at the New York Botanical Garden.
Bell continued his acting studies at Neighborhood Playhouse and Actors Studio, where Lee Strasberg and Ellen Burstyn later joined him.
