How did Tom Ford start his Professional Career?
Tom started his high school career at St. Michael’s High School in Sante Fe but soon changed to Santa Fe Preparatory School, where he eventually earned his diploma in 1979.
He started attending Simon’s Rock’s Bard College. He soon left, though, and moved to New York, where he enrolled at New York University to study art history.
While attending NYU, he came across Studio 54 and started concentrating on appearing in television advertisements. He barely stayed at NYU for a year before leaving.
Then, to pursue a degree in interior architecture, he enrolled at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. During his last year at the New School, Ford worked as an intern at Chloe’s publicity office in Paris for a whole year. Despite his growing passion for fashion and design, he still earned an architecture degree in 1986.
After graduating, Ford started working as a design assistant for American fashion designer Cathy Hardwick. To get the position, he claims to have contacted Hardwick every day for a month. He worked for the apparel firm Perry Ellis in 1988.
He loved European dress, though; he thought it was more elegant. After working for Perry Ellis for two years, Ford moved to Milan and was hired by Gucci to serve as its principal ready-to-wear designer.
Gucci was just another financially troubled Italian fashion brand at the moment. Ford made an outstanding contribution to Gucci, and in 1992 he was appointed design director.
Menswear and other garment areas were soon extended by him, and by 1993, he was in control of eleven product lines. At the time, Mello served as the company’s spokesperson.
His presence eclipsed Ford’s contributions as a result. He was named creative director in 1994. Gucci was valued at $4.3 billion in 1999, was almost insolvent, and owed most of its success to Ford. Ford also took on the role of creative director for the company after Gucci acquired the Yves Saint Laurent house in 1999.
