The Smothers Brothers began as folk musicians before incorporating humor into their performances. They got into a fight about telling the same jokes at Aspen appearances.
On The Steve Allen Show and Burke’s Law, Tom made his television debut. Later, they had their own show, but Tom wanted greater creative freedom. In 1967, Tom negotiated to have creative input over their upcoming CBS program, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
In order to cover taboo subjects like religion, drugs, sex, and the Vietnam War, they fought against CBS censors. Due to political pressure, their opposing politics caused the show to be canceled. Tom also contributed to the 1969 recording of “Give Peace a Chance” by John Lennon on guitar.
