When Tommy Morgan, who was born on December 4, 1932, was 11 years old, he started learning harp music. He received a master’s degree in music composing from the University of California, Los Angeles.
In 1950, when Morgan was 17 years old, he attended his first lesson with the Andrew Sisters. He joined the United States Air Force band in the middle of the 1950s and wrote original music for segments of several CBS programs, such as The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, and Have Gun, Will Travel.
Tommy was well known for playing the harmonica and was one of the most audible harmonica players in the world. His teams included Roots and Roots: The Next Generations. The pig Arnold Ziffel from Green Acres had music playing in the background thanks to his harp.
The Cincinnati Kid, The Wild Gang, The Cowboys, The Black Stallion, How the West Was Won, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and other well-known movies all featured him. He won Oscars for his contributions to The Right Stuff and Dances With Wolves albums.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Beautiful Woman, Free Willy, Back to the Future Part III, The Princess Diaries, Monsters, Inc., and other movies featured him in the future. On recordings by the Beach Boys, Randy Newman, Olivia Newton-John, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, and Carly Simon, among others, he contributed his talents.
He collaborated with artists like Frank Zappa, Van Dyke Parks, John Barry, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Elvis Presley’s 1968 comeback extravaganza, and his work was widely lauded for it.
For performances by well-known artists like Johnny Cash, he has written the arrangements. He once said it was a fun way to make a living and that he saw himself as a studio musician who performed the harmonica.
Chromatic Harmonica, Blues Harmonica, and You Made How Much for What? are three works by Morgan. The first two were works on music theory, and the third was an autobiography that was published this year.
He was honored by the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica with a lifetime accomplishment medal in 2001. In 2013, following a stroke, he resigned.
Tommy Morgan developed a reputation as a master harmonica player throughout his remarkable seven-decade career. When news of his passing spread, Twitter was flooded with condolences. The survivors of Tommy Morgan include his wife Lois, kids Matthew and Daniel, and granddaughter Addie Rae.
