Thank You for Being a Friend will be recorded by the 79-year-old for the Music for Dementia campaign.

It will be published in July to coincide with Thank You Day, which honors community service workers.

The event began during the Covid-19 pandemic and honored the efforts of NHS staff and caregivers in particular.

Tony Christie, whose real name is Anthony Fitzgerald, is best known for his 1971 hit (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, which acquired an entirely new fan base when it was re-released for Comic Relief in 2005, with Peter Kay and others appearing in the video.

Now residing in Lichfield, Staffordshire, he was born in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire.

Enhances symptoms

His most recent track, originally released in 1978 by Andrew Gold, will be available for free download, and he is expected to be accompanied on the recording by a number of special guests.

Christie stated,

“I continue to tour because I’ve discovered that music alleviates the symptoms of my dementia, so every time I go on stage and perform, it helps me.”

“It is essential for me to maintain a positive outlook and resist allowing dementia to impact my life, but I still require assistance. If anyone merits gratitude, it is the unseen and unheralded army of carers in the United Kingdom. This is intended for them!”

The Utley Foundation founded and funds Music for Dementia, which is directing the Thank You Day 2023 musical activities on Sunday, July 2.

Sarah Metcalfe, managing director of Music for Dementia, stated,

“Tony exemplifies the ability music has to improve life and bring joy, so we’re thrilled he’s agreed to sing the Thank You Day anthem.”
