Tonya Knight, a popular bodybuilder, died on February 7th, at the age of 56. She fought cancer for a long time before succumbing to it.
Sharon Bruneau, a former America’s Next Great Trainer co-host, paid tribute to Knight on Facebook, noting that the bodybuilding community had lost a wonderful young girl. She wrote that Knight had been an inspiration to thousands of people:
“I’m sorry we missed out on that shot.” Tonya, thank you for all of your love and support over the years. Heaven has received a truly magnificent Angel. My heartfelt condolences go out to her son, Malachi, and her family and friends. My Iron Sister is my absolute favorite. “Always fly high, Angel.”
According to Dave Liberman, who met Tonya once, she was a legend in women’s bodybuilding. He revealed that she was known as “Gold” in the American Gladiators series throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He continued, saying:
“I had the good fortune to run into her in 2016 at the Olympia, where she looked ageless and wonderful as she cruised into her 50s. Cancer claimed another victim far too soon after she had battled the disease for several years. My heartfelt condolences to Tonya’s friends and family as we all mourn the loss of an icon.”
Tonya Knight has established herself as a well-known figure in the bodybuilding industry over the years. When word of her death spread, Twitter was flooded with condolences:

Tonya Knight, born on March 24, 1966, was a member of her high school volleyball team and enjoyed volleyball throughout her school and college years. After seeing a magazine cover featuring Rachel McLish, she was inspired to pursue a career in fitness.
She began working out with her brother and joined a gym. When she first appeared on stage in 1983, she quickly rose to prominence. She then moved to Venice, Italy, and began competing in bodybuilding contests.
Throughout her career, she competed in a variety of events alongside other notable bodybuilders such as Anja Schrenier and Cory Everson, who won Ms. Olympia six times. Tonya Knight was crowned Ms. International in 1991, and she finished sixth in the same competition again in 1992.
She finished third in the Jan Tana Classic in 1993. Tonya Knight went on to win several more competitions, including the IFBB Grand Prix Italy, before retiring in 1993. She was a well-known television personality after appearing on American Gladiators. She left the show during the third season due to a knee injury.
