Trevor’s Life-Changing Injury
Trevor nailed a jump and picked up an edge while backcountry snowboarding on Vail Pass. He spun forward unintentionally while in the air. Trevor tucked forward, landing on his lower back instead of his head. He alleges that between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m., he laid in the snow until the search and rescue team could take him from the woods.
Despite being paralyzed from the waist down, Trevor continued to enjoy skiing and returned to the mountain on a sit ski. Trevor is also an excellent athlete, having executed the first backflip as a sit skier. Trevor has reinvented his life as a public person, attempting to teach the world what it means to be disabled and that it is normal.
Aside from being active on social media, he is currently working with the High Fives non-profit adaptive sports foundation, Darn Tough Vermont, and a variety of other organizations to spread this message. Trevor Kennison and Barry Corbet collaborated to create a documentary on their struggles following horrific spinal cord injuries 50 years apart.
I landed on my back, my board and boots crushed like a taco, and then I heard a loud pop. I remember lying there, thinking about my girlfriend, and my sister, telling my parents, telling my boss, not being a plumber anymore, not doing the things I enjoy. I stared at my feet and understood immediately.
