Who is Trevor Zegras?

Trevor Zegras is a professional ice hockey player who currently plays for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League in the United States. Trevor was selected ninth overall by the Ducks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Zegras was a member of the hockey squad at Boston University.

Childhood

Trevor Zegras was born on March 20, 2001, in Bedford, New York, United States, to Greek-American parents Gary and Julie. Trevor began skating at the age of three and joined the Rising Stars kids group with his cousins. Zegras grew up supporting the New York Rangers, but his hero was Chicago Blackhawks forwards Patrick Kane. At the end of his high school career, he obtained good ratings from Avon Old Farms School. Trevor then went on to obtain his Bachelor’s degree at a state university in the United States.

Zegras scored 18 goals and added 24 assists for a total of 42 points with the Winged Beavers from 2016 to 2017. As a sophomore at Avon Old Farms, Zegras qualified for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s (USNTDP) Top 40 tryouts. Zegras was a member of the USNTDP under 17 team in the 2017–18 United States Hockey League (USHL), where he scored 20 goals and contributed 39 assists for 59 points. He played for their U18 team in 2018–19, scoring 87 points and dishing out 61 assists. Despite being selected by the Anaheim Ducks, Zegras maintained his commitment to play NCAA Division I ice hockey at Boston University. Zegras was a member of the Boston University Terriers men’s ice hockey team for the 2019–20 NCAA season.

He appeared in 33 games for the Terriers, scoring 36 points, which tied him for third-most among Division I rookies. After his rookie season, Zegras was selected a Hockey East Third Team All-Star, a member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, and a finalist for Hockey East Rookie of the Year. Zegras was returned to the AHL in April to continue his development and transition to the professional league. “We’ve chosen to move him to center ice right away because he’s ahead of plan,” said Bob Murray, executive vice president, and general manager, of the re-assignment. Trevor Zegras will need some AHL experience initially, but we expect Trevor to return to us shortly and play center for the Ducks for many years.”
