Trooper Taylor and his wife, Evi Crosby Taylor, have been married for more than 30 years. His partner used to be a highly skilled collegiate athlete, just like him. Read on to find out! Carl “Trooper” Taylor was born in Cuero, Texas, on February 20, 1970.
He was born and raised in a household of sixteen. He attended Baylor University and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1992. Trooper was not just a college student, but also a passionate football player.
Taylor played defensive back for the Baylor Bears from 1988 to 1991, finishing as the school’s all-time leader in kickoff returns and return yardage. Taylor joined his alma mater’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant for two years after leading the Bears to the 1991 Copper Bowl.
After completing his degree in 1994, he was named the team’s wide receivers coach. He is now serving as interim head coach after Mike Elko departed to return to Texas A&M as head coach. Taylor previously worked as an assistant coach at Auburn University. From January 2009 to December 2012, he worked as the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach.

It may sound like a fairytale, but Trooper Taylor’s wife, Evi Crosby Taylor, was his college love. They met in college when they were both university athletes. Trooper played football, and Evi had a track and field scholarship at Baylor. They married in 1993, shortly after graduation, on the football pitch at Floyd Casey Stadium.
His wife is currently the associate dean of MSW education and a clinical assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work. She is a licensed clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience working with diverse populations in alternative schools.
Evi specializes in juvenile justice programs, hospitals, residential treatment centers, and private practice. Dr. Taylor previously served as the MSW Director and Co-Chair of Arkansas State University’s Social Work Department. She received the University Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017 and the University Excellence in Service Award in 2018.
Furthermore, Dr. Taylor was featured in Women in Higher Education in 2018. Dr. Taylor is on the board of directors for The Power of One or Two, Inc. Actually, it is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering, educating, and enhancing the lives of children and families by providing resources and opportunities. Dr. Taylor’s research focuses on stereotypes and implicit prejudice, educational injustice, and sports-related mental health. She has given national and international talks about racial inequities.
Taylor Named Interim Head Coach Of Duke
Previously, Trooper Taylor, Associate Head Coach and Running Backs Coach, took the position of Interim Head Coach at Duke Football. This change in circumstances occurred when David Cutcliffe departed on November 28, 2021. Trooper Taylor had previously held the temporary position until Mike Elko was appointed on December 13, slightly less than two weeks later.
Taylor joined Duke’s coaching staff in January 2019 and now serves as the program’s assistant head coach, instructing the Blue Devil running backs. Taylor, who has almost 30 years of coaching experience, played a crucial role in Auburn University’s 2010 BCS National Championship victory.
He has coached 16 bowl games for various colleges. Following Taylor’s temporary appointment, Athletics Director Nina King held a news conference to formally announce her decision. It also disclosed that the institution intends to conduct a nationwide search for the team’s new head football coach.
