Troy was raised in Santa Monica by his parents, Tom Hayden, a politician and activist, and his mother, Jane Fonda, an actress and activist among other things – although his last name is Hayden in his California Birth Index, he has stated that his parents named him Troy Garity.

He was named after Nguyen Van Troi, a Vietnamese resistance leader, and the ‘O’Donovan’ part came from Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, an Irish Fenian who lived in the nineteenth century. Troy has a half-sister from his mother’s first marriage, Vanessa Vadim, who is a director and cinematographer.

He also has an adopted sister, Mary Williams, who has followed in her parent’s footsteps and is an activist.
