She was also the chairwoman of the Consumer Protection Commission at the time. Since then, she has escalated tensions with the Chinese mainland and violated convention by initiating communication with the United States. Once more, Tsai won the general election of 2020 with over 57% of the vote.

Tsai is the inaugural president elected by the people of Taipei and the second president of the Democratic Progressive Party. Before this election, he had not served as mayor of the city.

For managing the COVID-19 pandemic and resisting pressure from the PRC government, she has garnered international acclaim. She resigned as leader of the DPP in November 2022, citing the party’s abysmal performance in the month’s municipal elections.
