The Common, a piece by Kathryn Maple that is now a part of the permanent collection of the Walker Art Gallery, received the John Moores Painting Prize in 2021.
The recipient of a prestigious art award will have her first significant exhibition in the gallery where she originally rose to recognition.
In February 2023, the Liverpool gallery will host her first significant show, titled Under A Hot Sun.
She described it as a “great opportunity” to be able to show in the gallery.
The annual art competition, which is held in the gallery and is named after its founding sponsor Sir John Moores, aims to assist artists and bring to Liverpool “the best contemporary painting from throughout the UK,” a spokeswoman said.
David Hockney, Mary Martin, Peter Doig, and Rose Wylie have all received awards in the past.
The south London-based Maple would follow Jacqui Hallum’s exhibition in 2019 as the only other winner to display art in a solo exhibition at the venue.
A “great opportunity,” according to the artist, her first solo exhibition would put her “in the company of numerous artists who have inspired my approach.”
Many of the paintings in the exhibit, according to her, “are inhabited by figures that synchronize with nature’s underlying rhythms.”
She stated,
“I try to give a link that is formed through the surface of the paintings that resonates and echoes a sense of place.
As much as possible, she stated, she “drew from reality” before reinterpreting her sketches in her studio and “creating a new relationship to areas I visit.”
She declared, “I am eager to keep the line searching and always extending my vocabulary of mark creating.
From the beginning to the end of a painting, this is crucial.
She continued by saying that she has been able to “rent a bigger studio and buy a bit more paint and canvas, which has allowed me to discover greater freedom in my work” since receiving the award and its £25,000 cash prize.
I am thrilled to have the chance to exhibit my most current paintings in one location at the Walker Art Gallery, she added.
The play Under a Hot Sun debuts on February 13 and runs until April 30.
