Tyler Matzek- Professional Career
On August 17, 2009, Matzek agreed to a $3.9 million signing bonus with the Colorado Rockies. He did not pitch professionally in 2009. Prior to the 2010 season, Baseball America ranked him as the 23rd best prospect in baseball. He went 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 89.1 innings of work for Single-A Asheville in 18 starts. However, he struggled with control, walking 62 batters and striking out four. Prior to 2011, Baseball America ranked him as the 32nd best prospect. He started the season at High-A Modesto, where he went 0-3 with a 9.82 ERA in 33 innings and 46 walks.
He was demoted to Asheville, where he had three poor outings before taking a “little mental break” following his June 17 start. Matzek began the 2012 season as a member of the Modesto Grizzlies. He was a mid-season All-Star in the California League, going 4-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 75 innings, striking out 83 and walking 52. Matzek was added to the Rockies’ 40-man roster on November 20, 2013. He began the 2014 season with Triple-A Colorado Springs. In 12 starts with the SkySox before being promoted to the majors, he went 5-4 with a 4.05 ERA, striking out 61 batters and walking 31 in 66.2 innings.

Matzek was promoted to the Colorado Rockies on June 11, 2014, to replace Eddie Butler, who was placed on the disabled list after making his major league debut. Matzek made his major league debut on that day. He began the 2015 season in the Rockies’ rotation before being demoted to Triple-A due to control issues. He’d be assigned to Triple-A for the remainder of the season. Matzek was placed on the disabled list for the 2016 season after undergoing surgery near the end of the 2015 season. He was released at the end of the season after being cut from the team in the middle of the season. In 2017, Matzek signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. He was released on March 28, 2017. The Seattle Mariners signed him to a minor league contract in 2018.

On June 9, 2019, Matzek signed with the American Association’s Texas AirHogs. He had a 2.64 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 30 3 innings pitched. Matzek’s contract was purchased by the Atlanta Braves on August 14, 2019. Matzek began his career with the Mississippi Braves, the Atlanta Braves’ AA affiliate. Matzek was promoted to the Gwinnett Stripers, the Braves’ AAA affiliate, after only one appearance in which he pitched 2.1 innings and struck out five batters.
