According to a friend of one of the youngsters who died after slipping into an ice lake in Solihull, the trio got into the water after attempting to rescue their trapped buddy. Three boys, aged 11, 10, and 8, died after falling into Babbs Mill Lake on Sunday afternoon.
A six-year-old child remains critically sick, and police have discounted concerns that there may be more people left beneath the lake after more than 24 hours with no new missing person reports. Tommy Barnet, ten, claimed to have seen details of the tragic occurrence on Sky News. They were all having a good time on the ice until one of them got his legs stuck, and when his friends raced to aid, they all plunged in.
According to Officer Supt. Harris, all of the officers who reacted to the incident entered the water without concern for their safety or any protective gear, with some going up to their waists. He said that one of his cops was breaking through the ice to save the children.
According to Supt. Harris, police were still working through the incident’s facts, so they couldn’t say how long the boys had been underwater before rescue came. He did, however, say that authorities came promptly after the original communication, which was made at about 14:30 GMT.
According to him, police were “doing everything we possibly could to support them” and were “following the families’ instructions on how much material was released to the public.”
