Uvaraja S/O Gopal’s Death Linked To Racism
There have been unsettling claims of racism and a toxic work culture inside the Singapore Police Force (SPF) following the untimely death of Uvaraja S/O Gopal. Uvaraja, a 36-year-old Sergeant with 18 years of service, detailed his terrifying experiences in a Facebook post published on July 21. Uvaraja claims that his problems started when he was assigned to a certain neighborhood police center (NPC), where he was subjected to racist epithets and called names by his teammates, including “killing Kia” and “black and smelly.”
He said that despite his hard work and long hours, he was constantly passed over for a promotion. He voiced concern about his supervisors’ apparent lack of assistance in advancing his career, claiming they never offered him a positive review. Uvaraja stated that, despite submitting a transfer application in 2019, his supervisor rejected it due to “manpower issues.”
Despite the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, Uvaraja never wavered in his dedication to his work. But he bemoaned the fact that his hard work went unnoticed and that his coworkers still treated him badly. In addition, Uvaraja mentioned that his teammates boycotted him and declined to go to his wedding.
He felt his efforts were frequently overlooked while less proactive officers were promoted. Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam responded to the grave accusations made in Uvaraja’s article by acknowledging that the officer died tragically and pledging to look into the claims of racism and mistreatment at work in detail.
