Tom Vitale, Valerie Bertinelli’s ex-husband, has asked the actress for spousal assistance after the couple decided to end their 11-year marriage.
According to court documents submitted on June 2 in Los Angeles Superior Court, the 58-year-old has petitioned Bertinelli for spousal support, according to People.
Financial expert Vitale also requested the court to review the prenuptial agreement the couple signed in December 2010 before their 2011 wedding and to stop Valerie Bertinelli from requesting spousal support. The prenuptial agreement is still legally binding on the parties and in full force, according to court documents.
After separating from Vitale in November 2021, the Wilderness Love actress filed for divorce in May 2022, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The Hot in Cleveland actress and Vitale wed on New Year’s Day 2011 in Malibu, California, after years of dating. After marrying Vitale, Bertinelli told People in January 2011 that she felt “happier than ever.” She remarked:
“I could have lived with Tom for the rest of my life without being married, but I really wanted to express the people I care about how I feel about Tom by calling him “my husband.”
From 1981 to 2007, Bertinelli was wed to the late rock icon Eddie Van Halen. The couple’s son, musician Wolfgang Van Halen, is now 31 years old. The renowned guitarist passed away in 2020 in October at the age of 65 following a stroke and a protracted fight with cancer.
In her book Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today, which was published earlier this year, Valerie Bertinelli wrote of her final moments with the late rock musician and her son.
“Ed says to Wolfie and me, ‘I love you,’ and that is the last thing we say to him before he stops breathing,”
In January, Bertinelli told the magazine that she and Vitale had “grown apart” and that their breakup had nothing to do with her love for the late rocker.
“I don’t feel anything for Ed, at all. As much as I wish Tom the best, I know he feels the same way about me.
Bertinelli described her split with Vitale as challenging and complex in her memoir.
We’ve deviated from the goals that initially drew us together and learned that those differences cannot be reconciled. He’s a good guy and going through a lot of the same things I’m going through: What can he do to add significance and purpose to his life? Where will he be happy? What is important to him? What has he found out? And what will he change going forward? The routes we thought we were on changed.
The book was started by Valerie Bertinelli just a few weeks after Eddie Van Halen passed away on October 6, 2020, from cancer.
