In 1943, Evangelos Odessey Papathanassiou, better known as Vangelis, was born in Greece. When he was six years old, he began taking music lessons at the Athens Music School.
Vangelis was born and raised in Athens, where he played in his first band, the Forminx, which featured Beatles covers and pop music. After a few years, he began creating film scores and sessions.
He founded the progressive-rock group Aphrodite’s Child in 1968 after moving to Paris with several Greek ex-pats, including Demis Roussos.
The group’s song Rain and Tear entered the UK Top 30 and was at the top of the charts in France, Belgium, and Italy. He began working with Yes frontman Jon Anderson after relocating to London in 1975, and the two created four albums as Jon and Vangelis between 1980 and 1991, one of which reached the UK’s top 10.
The next month, the opening theme from the soundtrack album Titles topped the Billboard Hot 100. The motif has been utilized throughout the Olympic Games. Additionally, he appeared in the films Alexander, The Bounty, Francesco, Bitter Moon, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
