Vernon Green II is found guilty of officer slain in the death of Katie Thyne

A jury found a man guilty of the murder of Newport News police officer Katie Thyne in this case.

The 12 jurors found that Vernon Green killed Newport News Police Officer Katie Thyne in the second degree, constituting second-degree murder.

Additionally, he was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident. On the first day of the trial, Green showed up unfettered and in business attire. He entered a plea of not guilty to both charges.

Authorities claim that during a traffic check, she was carried for a block by Green’s automobile before it crashed into a tree, killing her. She later passed away at a medical facility.

The jury finally decided that the defendant was guilty after two hours of deliberation. The Commonwealth’s Attorney asserts that Green deliberately put the automobile in motion while Officer Thyne was in the door and maintained a laser-like focus on the weapon in the car.

Despite having meant to depart, Green never killed or injured anyone, according to Green’s attorney.

Officer Thyne’s aunt said she was glad to hear the judgment. Green’s punishment is scheduled for February 17.

He asserted that even while they value the jury’s decision from today, they do not believe the issue has been addressed.

We’re hoping that justice will be served by February, and he’ll receive the worst penalty, said Tim Thyne.
