Later on Friday, at the age of 97, magician David Berglas passed away. He is regarded as a “giant in the magic fraternity.” 1954 marked the debut of his magician program on British television.
Known by the moniker “International Man of Mystery,” he established Meet David Berglas in 1954 as the inaugural British television program dedicated to a magician.
Throughout six decades, he made frequent appearances on television and radio and became a ubiquitous name for his antics, which included a blindfolded car circling London.
The Berglas Effect was a feat by which Berglas could locate the card of the audience member at the point of their choosing within a deck of playing cards.
It is considered the sacred grail of magical effects, but the mastermind behind its creation has never divulged the method.
In 2018, David Berglas was bestowed with an MBE in recognition of his contributions to the fields of magic and psychology.
“I am not only honored to accept this honor, but even more ecstatic that the art of magic has finally been acknowledged,” he exclaimed upon receiving his accolade.
“I have spent over 60 years entertaining people in person, on radio and television – ‘reading their minds’ – but I certainly didn’t see this one coming.”
Derren Brown, an illusionist, described Berglas as “one of our greatest living magical performers” upon receiving his MBE.
“Generations of magicians owe him a debt of gratitude,” Brown asserted.
“His astounding body of work and artistic prowess are what owe credit to each of my exhibitions.” I appreciate his consistent ability to inspire me.
Berger, who served as president of The Magic Circle from 1989 to 1998, was instrumental in the organization’s 1991 decision to allow women membership and revitalize the organization.
In September of this year, his son Marvin Berglas was elected president of The Magic Circle. He stated, “My father was a magician’s titan, renowned for his ingenuity, originality, and stage presence.
His conundrums have not only perplexed spectators but also his contemporaries. Nevertheless, his family will perpetually cherish his memory as a devoted paternal figure, grandfather, and spouse.
