After her infant drowned in the bathtub on June 22, 2022, Victoria Tristan, a 21-year-old Texas mother, was detained and charged with harming a child, a first-degree offense.

Victoria Tristan allegedly abandoned her infant unattended in the bathtub of their Round Rock apartment on January 18, which led to their demise, according to People News.

The affidavit states that Tristan was texting when the child died. According to the Daily Beast, Tristan allegedly allowed the water to run while her child was in the bathtub.

She is alleged to have sent texts to family members before going to sleep and letting the child drown. Victoria Tristan had reportedly been dozing off for at least ten minutes before she discovered the child underwater and lifeless. She told the authorities that she had attempted CPR but it had failed.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s initial autopsy report deemed the infant’s death to be an accident. Authorities looked into the situation, though, and Victoria Tristan was taken into custody five months after her child died.

Detectives looked into Tristan’s internet and mobile phone activities, and they found several things that worried the authorities, according to People News. While her child was in the shower, she reportedly texted for 5 minutes before disappearing for 8 to 10 minutes.

In order to figure out how to save her child who had been discovered drowning in the overflowing bathtub, Victoria Tristan reportedly spent 4 minutes searching YouTube before dialing 911, according to the Daily Beast.

Police claim that Victoria Tristan’s claimed negligence was the main factor in the child’s death, despite the fact that she had no malice inclination. The William County jail is where she is being detained. Authorities have not yet provided any details regarding her attorney or plea. She is currently incarcerated with a $300,000 bond.

The primary causes of newborn deaths in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and accidental asphyxia. Infant drowning deaths are another important worry, according to the CDC. It was said that for kids between the ages of 1-4, it is the most common cause of unintentional death.

The group estimates that there are approximately 3960 drownings in the nation each year, with an average of 11 drowning fatalities per day. It experiences about 8080 non-fatal drownings annually, or 22 non-fatal drownings on average every day. While many drowning patients treated in hospitals recover, the effects can be severe and lead to brain damage and other issues.
