President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has stated that he intends to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss Beijing’s recommendations for ending the conflict in Ukraine.
On the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he stated that the suggestion indicated China’s participation in the search for peace.
“I truly hope that China would not provide Russia with weapons,” he remarked.
The Chinese strategy calls for peace talks and national sovereignty respect.
Nevertheless, the 12-point paper does not state explicitly that Russia must withdraw its soldiers from Ukraine, and it also criticizes the use of “unilateral sanctions,” which is interpreted as a thinly veiled criticism of Ukraine’s Western partners.
The Chinese government has not replied publicly to Mr. Zelensky’s request for a summit with Mr. Xi.
In the meantime, Moscow praised China’s peace proposals. Moscow’s foreign ministry said in a statement,
“We agree with Beijing’s position.”
Beijing has vehemently refuted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s accusation that Beijing is considering transferring weapons and ammunition to Moscow, which he made earlier this week.
Friday, US media reported once more that the Chinese government was contemplating sending drones and artillery munitions to Moscow.
Friday, when asked about the Chinese plan, US President Joseph Biden told ABC News, “If [Russian President Vladimir] Putin applauds it, how could it possibly be any good?
“I’ve seen nothing in the plan that would indicate it would benefit anyone other than Russia,” he continued.
According to BBC Global Affairs Editor John Simpson, China appears to be siding with Russia, but it would prefer to find a way to rescue President Putin by orchestrating a face-saving peace deal.
The Chinese ideas are the result of Wang Yi’s Wednesday visit to Moscow when he spoke with President Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Mr. Wang was quoted by the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua as stating that Beijing was eager to “deepen political trust” and “strengthen strategic coordination” with Moscow following the meetings.
The newest suggestions were met with indifference by Western leaders. Nato head Jens Stoltenberg stated that Beijing lacks credibility due to its inability to condemn the illegal invasion of Ukraine.
President Putin started the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and Russian troops gained significant gains in Ukraine’s north, east, and south within the first few days.
However, the onslaught on the Ukrainian capital was quickly repelled, and the Ukrainian military was subsequently able to recapture huge territories.
The fight, the largest in Europe since World War II, has evolved into an attrition war.
Mr. Zelensky stated, at a lengthy news conference held in Kyiv on Friday, that success “inevitably awaits us” if partners “follow their promises and timetables.”
Poland has already delivered four Leopard II tanks manufactured in Germany to Ukraine and is prepared to send more. Germany will deliver 14 Leopard tanks, while Spain and Canada will also provide tanks.
The United States, by far the largest contributor of military assistance to Ukraine, has agreed to provide 31 M1 Abrams tanks, while the United Kingdom will contribute 14 Challenger 2 tanks.
After numerous African and South American nations abstained during a vote on a resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion by the United Nations General Assembly, the leader of Ukraine stated that his country had failed to sufficiently interact with African and Latin American countries.
He stated,
“We did not work well for many years, we did not pay attention, and I believe this was a grave error.”
When asked to choose his worst moment of the war thus far, Mr. Zelensky mentioned Bucha, a village outside of Kyiv where Russian troops are suspected of killing civilians in the early stages of the conflict.
The small town was under Russian hands until April of last year when Ukrainian forces pushed back to recover it.

The United States commemorated the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by announcing further sanctions against Russia and help for Ukraine.
The latest restrictions target over a hundred Russian and international organizations, including banks and defense equipment providers. The United States stated that it wished to stop people from assisting Russia in using sanctions gaps to obtain banned materials.
The latest batch of aid from the White House to Ukraine totals $12 billion (£10 billion), with the Department of Defense contributing $2 billion in ammunition and drones and the State Department contributing $10 billion in financial support to the Ukrainian government.
Ukraine and neighboring Moldova would each receive an additional $550 million to upgrade their energy infrastructure.
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, and the war has had a significant impact there. Its leaders have been warning for weeks that Moscow is orchestrating a coup d’état.
It comes days after US President Joseph Biden made an unannounced trip to Kiev and met with Mr. Zelensky.
The European Union approved its tenth round of sanctions against Russia on Friday, including restrictions on dual-use technologies.
