Presenter Owain Wyn Evans from Cardiff will host the new early breakfast program on BBC Radio 2. The live program will be the first-weekday Radio 2 program to leave London.
Beginning in January, the program will be broadcast from BBC Cymru Wales.
Vanessa Feltz resigned in July 2022, and Owain has taken her place. He said: “I can’t wait to help kick start the day on early breakfast live from Cardiff.”
The move is a part of the BBC’s ambitions for “Across the UK,” which the organization stated would enable it to “better reflect, represent, and serve all sections of the country.”
The show will be televised from 4:00 to 6:00 BST, Monday through Friday.
“I never allowed myself to hope that one day I’d have my own show on Radio 2,” Owain said. “When I asked my parents for a pair of turntables and a mixing desk from a DJ shop in Llanelli when I was 13, I didn’t allow myself to dream.”
When he was 18 years old, he began his career as a television and radio presenter, first at BBC Wales as a children’s newscaster and afterward as a weather presenter all across the UK.
Since he was seven years old, he has been an avid drummer. In 2020, while the school was under lockdown, he made a video of himself playing the drums to the BBC News theme song, which went viral and received tens of millions of views.
Comfort and Wit
It catalyzed the most successful 24-hour challenge in the 41-year history of BBC Children in Need, a record-breaking 24-hour drumathon that raised more than £3.8 million.
Owain is now a member of the Radio 2 family, according to Radio 2 president Helen Thomas.
He has strong connectionsolidles, therefore I’m thrilled he will be hosting a live show from Cardiff every morning during the workweek.
He is the ideal presenter to start the day for our listeners all around the country because of his warmth and wit. They have clearly and enthusiastically embraced him each time he has presented in this position.
“I’m happy that Radio 2 listeners will be starting their weekdays in Owain’s company, live every weekday from BBC Wales’ home in Cardiff’s Central Square,” said Rhuanedd Richards, director of BBC Cymru Wales.
It’s excellent news that he will be taking to the airwaves from Cardiff and waking people across the UK because he began his career as a presenter here in Wales.
