Career
A gifted self-taught musician who played the seraphine, melodeon (reed-like organs), and violin Kittredge toured both solos and with the musical troupe the Hutchinson Family. Over the course of his career, he wrote over 500 songs, many of which dealt with themes related to the American Civil War.
Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, also known as “Tenting Tonight,” was sung by both sides of the war and is well-known around the world. Kittredge had offered the song to a Boston publisher for $15 and had been turned down; however, when it was released several months later, ten thousand copies were sold in the first three months.
Kittredge had been drafted into the American Civil War in 1863 but had been rejected by the draft board due to a severe attack of rheumatic fever. He was unable to sleep that night and was inspired to write his most famous song. “I actually saw the entire scene, as described in the song,” Kittredge said.
Kittredge also advocated for abolitionism and the Temperance movement.
