Career
Bu began his career in the Shanghai film industry, working for a number of studios until joining the Mingxing Film Company as a prominent director. By 1931, Bu had moved to Lianhua, Mingxing’s rival, where he directed films like Love and Duty (1931) and The Peach Girl (1932). (1931).
Bu directed several films with subtle patriotic themes as the war with Japan intensified, the most famous of which is 1939’s Mulan Joins the Army. However, after the Japanese took control of Shanghai, Bu was forced to make several propaganda pictures for the occupiers, including Eternity in 1943. He was shunned by his peers after the war for these works, prompting him to relocate to Hong Kong in 1948, where he continued to direct till he retired.
