Was The Death Of Ellen Greenberg A Homicide Or A Suicide

Ellen Greenberg

First grade was taught by Ellen Rae Greenberg, a young instructor at Juniata Park Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She was Joshua and Sandra Greenberg’s only child and a resident of New York City.

Greenberg, who was born on June 23, 1983, was discovered dead in the kitchen of her apartment at the age of 27 from numerous stab wounds.

Her murder investigation went viral and was covered by publications such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, Dr. Oz, People, 48 Hours, etc.

In addition, episodes of Accident, Suicide or Murder, the Criminology Podcast, Sisterhood, Catch My Killer, and Crime Junkie have been inspired by the enigma and suspicion surrounding her murder.

Was Ellen Greenberg’s death a homicide or a suicide?

The cause of Ellen Greenberg’s death was first determined to be a homicide until it was abruptly changed to suicide.

The flat door was locked from the inside, according to investigators on the scene. They said there were no indications of an invasion and the victim showed no symptoms of self-defense.

Sam, Ellen’s fiancé, claimed to have broken the door to the kitchen after coming home from the gym. According to reports, Ellen had been diagnosed with severe anxiety.

Joshua and Sandra Greenberg, who are from Harrisburg, are fighting nonstop to have their civil lawsuit heard in court.

They have led their inquiry for the last 11 years and remain unpersuaded. They also employed Joseph Podraza, an attorney, to get the cause of death changed to homicide.

When a snowstorm struck Philadelphia on January 26, 2011, Ellen Greenberg quit her job and went home to her Manayunk apartment.

She shared a residence with her fiancé Samuel (Sam) Goldberg, a Gladwyne-based television producer who formerly worked for N.B.C. and Golf.com.

Around 6:40 that evening, Ellen was found dead from several stab wounds.

Twenty stab wounds were found on her, and 10 of them were to her neck and back. She also has 11 bruises on her right arm, right leg, and abdomen.

The crime scene was first regarded as a suicide even though there was no suicide note.

The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office’s autopsy first classified the incident as a homicide, but the Philadelphia Police Department later changed its mind.

In February 2011, the situation was overturned, and suicide was formally declared, with no justification provided to the Greenbergs.

What is going on with the Ellen Greenberg death case?

On March 15, 2019, The Philadelphia Inquirer published a front-page investigation article analyzing the odd circumstances surrounding Ellen Greenberg’s passing.

A forensic pathologist from Pittsburgh named Cyril H. Wecht examined the case and concluded that it was “strongly suspicious of homicide.” In addition, he voiced surprise at “how they wrote this off as a suicide.”

Similarly, after reviewing the case data, forensic expert Henry Lee concluded that the types, quantity, and blood markings were “consistent with a homicide scene.”

In the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Dr. Marlon Osbourne, the pathologist who performed the autopsy, and the Medical Examiner’s Office were the targets of a civil lawsuit brought by Greenberg’s parents in October 2019.

According to the lawsuit, the cause of death should have been changed from suicide to homicide or “undetermined,” given the availability of new facts.

The 20 wounds on Greenberg were recreated in 3D anatomically using a new technology called photogrammetry that was previously unheard of, proving that none of the wounds were self-inflicted.

The Chester County District Attorney’s office declared in August 2022 that it will reopen an inquiry into Greenberg’s case.

The Greenbergs sued the government again in October 2022, this time for financial losses.

An appeals court heard arguments in November 2022. Before a choice is made, a few months may pass.
