Wayne Bunnell, Rome Odunze’s maternal grandfather, has had a significant impact on the Huskies player. ESPN recently explored Rome and his relationship with his grandfather. Previously, Rome told 247Sports that his grandfather, Wayne, taught him how to milk cows. He spent a large part of his childhood on farms with his grandparents.
The ESPN video was taken on the day of the Sugar Bowl when the entire Bunnell community was rooting for Rome and his team. As seen by his mother’s social media handle, Necia Bunnell, the football player is close to her family. In the video, a young Rome is seen riding on his grandfather’s tractor.
He would spend his summers working alongside his grandfather on his dairy farm. In the film, Necia recounts that her father instilled hard work in her from a young age in Rome. The player agrees and attributes his work ethic to his grandfather.
Rome recalls that his grandfather toiled away on the farm for a long time to make ends meet. Wayne prioritized his fitness while working on the farms, and after milking 80 cows at 4 a.m., he would go on a 30-mile cycle ride.
Wayne Bunnell’s Accident
However, one incident changed Wayne’s life. On August 4, 2016, he was in an accident and fell over the handlebars. Wayne was smacked in the head and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Wayne was wearing a helmet at the time, but it couldn’t keep him safe due to the speed of the impact.
In his interview, Wayne states that he has no recall of the crash. Wayne lost his sight as a result of the accident, and Necia states that he had to give up farming and had to start over. Wayne has never seen Rome play for the Huskies, but he sits in his recliner and listens to Rome’s games whenever they play. In the film, Wayne comments, “It’s neat to see him do well and accomplish a lot.” I adore him and am quite proud of him.”
James Odindu Odunze, Rome Odunze’s Paternal Grandfather
The post was sent in 2018, while Rome was a member of Bishop Gorman Gaels, his high school team. He had broken the Nevada state record for receiving yards in a single game. Rome, according to Ikenna, was following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Odindu Odunze, by setting an athletic record.
His grandfather’s sporting achievements remain unknown, even though he holds a Ph.D. Odindu Odunze, sometimes known as James Odunze, may have received a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He has a Facebook profile but does not appear to be a frequent social media participant.
