Jen and Chris Herro welcomed Tyler Herro into the world on January 20, 2000, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Chris recognized Herro’s aptitude at a young age and decided to develop it. In his day, Chris was a talented basketball player who was expected to make it to the NBA. However, a tragic ACL tear ended his chances.
Tyler had it tough with Chris; he chastised him for his subpar work and replaced him when Tyler wouldn’t take his counsel. The two’s father-son bond, however, was always distinct from their relationship as players and coaches. Chris did not let his kid and the objectives he had set for Tyler get separated.
Tyler made the unpopular choice to leave the University of Wisconsin and transfer to the more selective Kentucky University, and Chris’s tough love was there to support him. Although it was the right choice for Chris’s career, everyone else viewed it as a betrayal, except his family and close friends. Tyler began receiving death threats as a result of the Wisconsin faithful’s intense resentment.
He was fortunate to have a thick skin that allowed him to flourish despite the hatred. Tyler continues to be a divisive character because of his haughty demeanor on the court. Chris acknowledged that he showed Tyler how to be haughty without coming across as haughty:
I explained to him early on that being cocky and being arrogant are two different things. Basketball players who want to compete at the highest level must possess some element of hubris. You wouldn’t be successful on the basketball court otherwise. People don’t realize there is a difference because of this. That’s confidence if you can back it up and play.

Jen remained in the background, ensuring that Chris and Tyler’s relationship remained amiable, while Chris took center stage when it came to mentoring Tyler. Jen stated to BleacherReport that she always believed Chris treated Tyler unfairly:
Their relationship has always been one of love and hate. Chris and I used to argue frequently because I believed he treated Tyler far too harshly.
After earning his NBA deal, Tyler gave his mother a $5,000 Gucci bag as a thank you gift for all she had done.
