Alison Botha, a 27-year-old insurance broker, was abducted, raped, and severely injured. Her assailants abandoned Botha on the outskirts of town. She regained consciousness, however, and made it to the next road, where she was rescued by a passing veterinarian. The offenders were identified and sentenced to life in prison for rape, abduction, and attempted murder.
Botha later became a motivational speaker. She was also named the 1995 Rotarian Paul Harris Award winner for ‘Courage Beyond the Norm,’ Femina magazine’s ‘Woman of Courage,’ and Port Elizabeth’s ‘Citizen of the Year.’ Alison, a documentary based on her debut novel, was released in 2016.
Alison Botha was born on September 22, 1967, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Her mother and her 18-month-old elder brother Neale raised her after her parents divorced when she was ten years old. She attended Port Elizabeth’s Collegiate High School for Girls, where she graduated as the top girl in 1985. She then spent several years traveling and working as an insurance broker.
Kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder are all crimes
Botha was returning home at 1 a.m. on a December day in 1994 after dropping off a coworker. She couldn’t find a parking spot in her usual lot, so she went to another one within walking distance of her house. As she attempted to exit her vehicle, an unknown man threatened her with a knife. He urged her to follow him and hand over the keys to the vehicle.
He told her that if she obeyed his command and only needed the car for a short time, he would not harm her. He drove Botha to the city’s outskirts, where he met up with another person. They raped and choked her to death after stopping somewhere where no one could find them.
They proceeded to stab her in the stomach, disembowel her, and finally cut her neck. She had no idea what had happened to her when she regained consciousness. “All I could see was an arm moving above my face,” she explained. She then remembered the heinous scene without pain, as if it were a dream.
“I was standing outside the car, now on the sand and broken glass,” she explained, “and all I could see was an arm moving above my face.” Left and right, left and right, left and right, left and right. His movements made a sound. It was a wet sound, like my skin was being sliced open. He was severing my neck with the knife. “Time and again.”
“It seemed surreal, but it wasn’t.” There was no pain, but it wasn’t a dream. This was going on. “The man was slashing my throat,” said Botha, “and I was completely aware of the fear and horror coursing through every nerve in my body.” As the guy walked away, I shifted onto my front and heard their words fade further away from me. There was a strange rasping sound.”
Botha didn’t realize the rasping sound was coming from her own throat until later. She tried to suppress the sound her body was making because she was afraid they would hear her alive if she was too loud.
How did she get there?
The two guys were certain she was dead after slicing her neck 15 times and that no one in such a state could live. Because she overheard the guys talking, she pretended to be dead until they drove away. Botha, on the other hand, was only 27 at the time. She wished to achieve more in life and did not want to die.
“At that moment, I knew I had to leave at least a clue about who did this to me, so I wrote their names in the sand and ‘I love Mom’ beneath it,” she said on her deathbed. I had so much more I wanted to do, so much more I wanted to live for.”
Botha began by writing the names of the guys on the stone she was laying on and preparing herself to stand. While moving, she discovered her internal organs on the surface of her body. Nonetheless, Botha chose to run.
“It was time to get started. I crept through the mud and shattered glass, clutching my clothes in one hand. With each subsequent movement, I became increasingly tired. “At some point, I collapsed onto the sand, exhausted,” she says.
“As I struggled forward, my sight faded in and out, and I fell many times but managed to get back up until I finally reached the road,” Botha explained.
She gathered her belongings from beside her, covered her abdomen with one hand, straightened her head with the other, and made her way to the nearest road, hoping that someone would notice her.
“I pulled my head forward with my free hand, and my vision returned, at least temporarily,” while explained. As I pushed on, my vision faded in and out, and I fell several times but managed to climb back up until I reached the road.”
Due to the intensity of the effort and stress, Botha wanted to give up and die several times. Every time she tried, she was reminded of her mother. “But then I remembered my mother, and I knew I had to keep going.” So I dragged myself up and crawled some more, but it was too slow. “I knew then that I had to get back on my feet,” she said.
Who rescued her?
Tiaan Eilerd, a veterinary student on vacation from Johannesburg, happened to see her lying on the road. He kept her alive and conscious until medical help arrived. When the medical team and Eilerd arrived at the hospital, the doctors were taken aback because they had never seen such damage on a single person who was still alive.
Botha was found with 36 knife wounds in his stomach, 17 slashes in his neck, and numerous sexual assaults. However, she survived because none of the lesions had reached her arteries and her trachea was still intact, allowing her to breathe adequately.
Botha identified the offenders after the operations. They were identified as Satanists named Theuns Kruger and Frans du Toit. They allegedly performed a ceremony on her as a Satanic sacrifice. Her crimes and survival shocked the entire country, and her trial was dubbed the Noordhoek Ripper Trial. Regardless, the defendant pled guilty to all counts, including kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder. They were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in August 1995.
