Kwasi Kwarteng made headlines after new British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced his appointment as the country’s new finance minister on Tuesday.
Kwasi served as Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2021 to 2022 before becoming the first African individual to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
After Johnson resigned in 2022, he supported Liz Truss’ quest to become Conservative leader and appointed Kwarteng as Chancellor of the Exchequer after Truss became Prime Minister.
Since 2010, the Chancellor has been a member of the Conservative Party and an MP for the northern Surrey constituency of Spelthorne.
Upon Boris Johnson’s selection as the new prime minister in July 2019, he was promoted to Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth and began attending Cabinet meetings.
The Chancellor was a financial analyst at JPMorgan Chase and other investment institutions and a columnist for The Daily Telegraph prior to his election to parliament.

Kwasi Kwarteng, an ally and political soulmate of new British Prime Minister Liz Truss, has been appointed as the next UK Chancellor.
Before he became Britain’s new Finance Minister, a prominent new journal, The Times, predicted that in 2006, he would become the first black Conservative cabinet minister.
The opposition asserts that Kwarteng may have violated the ministerial code, and they are demanding an investigation. After Kwarteng advocated for the appointment of Kathryn Stone, an independent Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, the government reversed its support for Paterson, who then resigned as an MP.
In 2021, the Chancellor published an apology letter to Stone in which he stated that he “did not intend to express doubt about your ability to perform your duties” and apologized for “any upset or distress my choice of words may have caused.”

The winner of the notoriously difficult BBC debate program University Challenge, the new British Finance Minister also holds a Ph.D. in economic history and a double first from Cambridge University.
In the 2005 general election, he ran for the Conservatives in the Brent East constituency and was considered a rising figure on the party’s right.
After the COP26 climate summit, the Chancellor met with oil industry executives to convince them to continue excavating in the North Sea.
During his visit to Saudi Arabia, the Chancellor accepted flights and hospitality from Saudi Aramco, the nation’s largest energy company.

Kwasi Kwarteng’s health is good. It is probable that the Chancellor will be accused of lacking intellectual ferocity or self-assurance.
The Chancellor argued that many Black Lives Matter supporters and critics of British imperialism have “a very cartoonish view” of the past.
In addition to his political career, he authored the 2011 book Ghosts of Empire about the legacy of the British Empire.
As a writer, he co-authored the book Britannia Unchained with four other MPs. The book advocates for a fundamental reduction of the welfare state in order to “return it to the contributory principle envisioned.”
In 2011, Kwasi co-wrote Gridlock Nation with Jonathan Dupont about the causes and remedies for traffic congestion in the United Kingdom.
The Chancellor is considered a member of the Conservative Party’s conservative faction.
