Those were the last words said by Lucy Lawless in the Spider-Man film from 2002. Despite being one of the film’s briefest appearances, her role as the Punk Rock Girl brought her widespread acclaim.
It’s hardly fair to argue that this is what made Lawless a household name in Hollywood, though. The actress had already established herself in the profession years before her three-second cameo in Sam Raimi’s superhero film brought her a legion of new fans.
However, she did receive some assistance in landing the part.

Before her cameo in Raimi’s Spider-Man film, Lawless had already established herself as a minor Hollywood star. Prior to Xena: Warrior Princess, she had worked with Raimi on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.
Not only that, but her husband Rob Tapert is a longtime companion of Raimi’s as well. Raimi simply asked her to come on set and play a little role in the movie.
Because she happened to be in New York at the time, she complied. She “simply rocked up,” as she put it, to the shooting.
Lawless told Collider in March 2021 that she was unable to experiment with her role. It was all planned out before she even woke up.
It was “pure Sam,” she told Collider of the two lines she had to deliver on camera. There weren’t even any retakes because she said those lines so perfectly the first time.
When her shift was over, she didn’t change out of the costume but instead went home in it. When she wore it on the plane, she received some curious glances.
“I wore that punk attire home on the aircraft, and, yeah, folks aren’t too nice to punks!” she exclaimed. They’re scared, so they’re acting aggressively.
How Lucy Lawless’ “Spider-Man” Appearance Affected Her Career
In the 1987 film Funny Business, Lawless first appeared on the big screen. Over the next decade, she took on increasingly significant roles, and in 1994, she made her debut in the fan-favorite Hercules film series.
As of that year, she had already made an appearance in the TV movie Hercules and the Amazon Women. Then her crush on Xena, a fan-favorite from the Hercules universe, began.
Her first appearance as Xena was in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in 1995, and the following year she and the character earned their own program, Xena: Warrior Princess.
Her cult following was amassed during the latter’s run from 1995 to 2001.
Since her brief appearance in Spider-Man in 2002, she had guest-starred on a number of popular television shows. Her most famous roles have been as D’Anna Biers on Battlestar Galactica, Lucretia on Spartacus, Diane Lewis on Parks and Recreation, and Rebecca Bunch on Salem (Countess Marburg).
Her most recent roles are as Alexa Crowe in My Life Is Murder and Nun-Chuck in the upcoming animated feature film Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022).
