Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, who had been out from work for more than two months recovering from shingles, appeared strikingly emaciated when she returned to the Capitol last week.
She was propelled in a wheelchair through the marble corridors of the Senate, with the left side of her face frozen, one eye almost closed, and a perplexed expression. She complained that there was something in her eye.
After being hospitalized in February for herpes zoster, Ms. Feinstein encountered several difficulties, some of which have not been made public.
The chickenpox also affected her face and neck, resulting in Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a facial paralysis that affected her vision and balance.
