Later he enrolled at Western Carolina University, but shortly after he moved to Kent State University from which he soon dropped out and began hitchhiking around the states. In 1983, David relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he enrolled at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, from which he graduated in 1987.

David Sedaris’ performing talent was discovered by the radio host and producer Ira Glass while David was reading his diary in one of Chicago’s numerous clubs, which he had kept since 1977 and his hitchhiking adventures.
