Nia Dennis has competed for the National Team since 2012. Dennis debuted internationally two years later at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy. She earned silver in the all-around, on the bars, and team gold. At the 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Richmond, Canada, she duplicated her exploits.

Nia Dennis was born to Casey and Demetra Dennis on February 23, 1999, in Columbus, Ohio. Early on, her parents were aware of her talent and pushed her to begin training. “My parents claimed that I used to play on the monkey bars often when I was a kid.” USA Gymnastics was told by Nia. They advised me to begin training in gymnastics.
Dennis began gymnastics at roughly seven years old. The native of Ohio joined the National Team six years later. Nia is regarded as one of America’s top gymnastics prospects because of her talent as well as her originality.
Dennis captivated the world’s attention by performing a fantastic “Black excellence” floor performance as UCLA faced Arizona State in late January 2021. Nia bowed and raised a fist before breaking out into a dance to Kendrick Lamar’s DNA. She then started stepping and snap dancing to the music as a tribute to her father and black fraternities. Nia later revealed to UCLA Athletics:
“Since I’m a dancer at heart, I wanted to throw a party. I wanted to honor my father in some way. He is Greek, has fraternity experience, and has really large steps.
Nia’s then started clapping while Missy Elliott’s Pass the Dutch was playing in the background. As Monica’s every time Tha Beat Drops began to play, several West Coast street dances—complete with a mid-air split—were performed. Dennis received an almost flawless score of 9.95 out of 10 for the exercise. She later discussed the inspiration behind her viral routine with the Los Angeles Daily News:
“This routine truly captures who I am as a woman today, and of course, I had to include a lot of my culture.”
Nia received praise from Kamala Harris for her 2020 floor dance that was influenced by Beyonce.
Nia performed her debut floor dance at a Pac-12 conference competition in 2020. The Beyonce-inspired performance received 9.975 out of 10 ratings.
Dennis danced to songs by Beyonce, including Crazy in Love, 7/11, Ego, and Lose My Breath by Destiny’s Child. The announcer said, “That was just pure fun, and she can just turn her personality on and let it show,” as Nia finished her breathtaking dance.
Celebrities including Jada Pinkett Smith, Alicia Keys, and then-California Senator Kamala Harris expressed their shock and congratulations to Nia on Twitter. Because of Nia’s diligence and the inspiration she receives from assistant coach and professional dancer BJ Das, Dennis’s routines are faultless. To Bruin Banter, Nia said:
It has truly been fantastic. She has given me a ton of various styles and moves to work with and explore, especially ones with which I’m not particularly familiar. This has helped me step outside of my comfort zone a little bit, which I think is pretty wonderful.
