American-born Eric Bieniemy is a former player and coach. He represented the Colorado Buffaloes in collegiate football. He was named a unanimous All-American during their national championship season in 1990, and he finished third in the Heisman Trophy vote.
Bieniemy served as Colorado’s offensive coordinator for two seasons before going on to Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 as the running backs coach. After 10 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, five of which he spent as their offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy parted ways. Eric consented to an agreement that would see him depart the Chiefs and work as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.
“Welcome, Eric,” the Commanders tweeted to share the news. Eric Bieniemy, a two-time Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator, is our new assistant head coach. The additional title of assistant head coach comes with the new post, along with a wage increase and a multi-year contract. Bieniemy will take over as head coach in lieu of Scott Turner, who was fired at the end of the season.
In his five prior seasons as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Bieniemy witnessed Patrick Mahomes grow into a two-time MVP and five-time Pro Bowler. Additionally, he contributed to Kansas City’s three Super Bowl appearances, two victories, including their most recent 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
An ex-defensive player will probably be in charge of the Commanders’ offense under the direction of head coach Ron Rivera. Washington has a dearth of offensive skill, but they do have some intriguing playmakers. However, the assistant coach will likely have an impact on every aspect of what the Washington team performs in 2023, which might alter public view of his potential to become an NFL head coach sooner rather than later.
